Hoke Co. commissioner released from jail after accusations of making threats

Hoke County Commissioner Anthony "Tony" Hunt was released from jail Friday night after being arrested on Wednesday afternoon.

Hunt, 51, of the 1100 block of Stonegate Drive in Raeford, was arrested on charges including a felony count of larceny from a person, misdemeanor domestic assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun, resist/obstruct/delay an officer and carrying a concealed weapon.

When asked if he had anything to say about the charges or anything to say to citizens who elected him, Hunt declined to comment Friday night.

Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said the charges stemmed from an incident Wednesday between Tony Hunt and his estranged wife at her home in the 3700 block of Old Maxton Road south of Raeford.

The sheriff's office said deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the residence.  Hunt's wife reported to authorities Tony Hunt possessed a handgun.

Upon arrival, deputies found Hunt driving his pickup truck in a careless and reckless manner, authorities said.

Deputies were able to get him to exit the vehicle and tell law enforcement the handgun he had was in the house.

When deputies attempted to frisk Hunt, he tried to maneuver in his jacket to hide the concealed weapon in his jacket pocket, the sheriff's office said. Hunt was placed under arrest at this point, authorities said.

Hunt's wife told detectives he held a gun to her head and then took her phone so she couldn't call for help following an investigation, the sheriff said.

She also told detectives Hunt threatened to kill her.

Authorities said Hunt has not lived with her since July.

Hunt will have his first scheduled court appearance on Dec. 2.
