Opelika campus shooting death trial begins

Posted: Updated:

Jurors are expected to consider the case of a 2011 shooting that left one dead and others injured on the Opelika campus of Southern Union Community College.

Two years after the shooting, jury selection for the trial of Thomas Franklin May III is set to begin Monday, WRBL News 3's media partner The Opelika-Auburn news reports.

The defendant, a 37-year-old Opelika man, is accused of one count of capital murder and three counts of attempted murder. Police say he shot into a car occupied by the family of his ex-wife, Bethany Lynn May, killing her mother, Brenda Watson, as well as injuring her grandmother, Maude Ethell Marshall, and May's child on April 6, 2011. After turning himself in to police that day, May pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
