Marion County football wins WRBL Athletes of the Week

BUENA VISTA, Ga. -

The Marion County Eagles have already set program history, and hope to do it again.

With a win over Dooly County last week, the Eagles advanced the state football semifinals for the first time in school history, and for that, they are the latest WRBL Athletes of the Week.

They earned a date with Hawkinsville at home, a team that beat them, 14-10, in the regular season.

"They have a great offense and a good defense," said junior quarterback Dustin Eckert. "It's just going to be a tough game. It's going to be a battle."

Eckert and do-everything sophomore Lorenzo Smothers led the attack last week.

"We have to be more focused," Smothers said. "This time we have to be more focused, go out and want it, do or die."

Friday's game could very well be the biggest sporting event ever for the school that calls Buena Vista home.

"A football team can draw a whole community together, all aspects of the community," said head coach Mike Swaney. "It's really brought the people together and I'm just so happy for them that they can come out and enjoy an event like this in their hometown."

Marion County's semifinal matchup with Hawkinsville is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff.
