Tigers lock up Malzahn with extension, raise

AUBURN, Ala. -

One year and two days after hiring Gus Malzahn at Auburn University, Jay Jacobs made sure his new head coach will stick around for awhile.

Jacobs extended Malzahn's contract for six years and raised his annual salary to $3.85 million per year, the school announced late Friday night.

The new deal takes effect in 2014, and each year after that, Malzahn will receive a $250,000 raise.

If he coaches for the full term, Malzahn will make $5.1 million in the final year of the contract.

"As I've said before, we want Coach Malzahn to be at Auburn for a long time," Jacobs said in a news release. "The new contract includes a raise and extension and is our statement that Auburn is committed to Coach Malzahn for the long haul. While this season has been remarkable, I'm equally excited about the future of our program under his leadership. The future of Auburn football is very bright."

This comes days after a Sports Illustrated report cited "unnamed sources" that said Malzahn called the University of Texas his "dream job."

"Jay made a good recommendation, and I support it," said Auburn president Dr. Jay Gogue. "A lot of programs would love to have Coach Malzahn, so this is a good move that allows him to continue taking Auburn football where our fans want it. I've consulted with the president pro tem of the Auburn Board, and he let me know that he supports it as well."
