Tre Mason, AJ McCarron are Heisman finalists

Posted: Updated:

Auburn running back Tre Mason and Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron have been named finalists for the Heisman trophy.

Mason had the best performance of his life in Saturday's SEC championship game with 46 carries, 304 yards, and four touchdowns.

"When I heard the news, I was in disbelief," Mason said. "This has been such a season for our team and we are going to the national championship. For me to be invited to the Heisman ceremony, I am honored and blessed. I couldn't have done it without my teammates; this is an honor for all of them also."

McCarron has been the model of consistency for Alabama at quarterback during his career in Tuscaloosa.

"It is a tremendous honor to be selected as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy," McCarron said following the announcement on Monday evening. "This will be my first trip to New York City, and I can't put into words how much it means to me. I am truly privileged to have the opportunity to represent our team at the Heisman ceremony. None of this would be possible without my coaches and teammates. The offensive line, wide receivers, running backs and tight ends have done an unbelievable job all season and our coaches always put us in a position to be successful."

Reigning Heisman winner Johnny Manziel, Boston College's Andre Williams, Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch, and Florida State's Jameis Winston are the other four finalist for the most prestigious award in college athletics.

Auburn's last Heisman winner was Cam Newton in 2010. Alabama's last Heisman winner was Mark Ingram in 2009.
