AUBURN, Ala. -

Auburn's Tre Mason and Gus Malzahn were recognized for their efforts in making the Tigers a national title contender Wednesday afternoon.

Both were honored by Southeastern Conference coaches, Mason as the Offensive Player of the Year and Malzahn as the Coach of the Year.

Mason has rushed for 1,621 yards and an Auburn record 22 touchdowns this season, including 304 yards in the SEC championship game against Missouri, a championship game record.

His play late in the season has propelled him into the national spotlight; he is one of six finalists that will be in New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Saturday.

Malzahn inherited a team that had gone 3-9 overall and 0-8 in SEC play a year ago and turned them into the 13-1 SEC champions and playing for a national championship.

The day before the SEC title game, Auburn announced Malzahn had agreed to a six-year contract extension, raising his annual pay to $3.85 million per year.
