Holocaust survivor says state Senator should resign over Nazi tweet

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A North Carolina state Senator is not backing away from comments he posted on Twitter comparing Obamacare to Nazis.  It was a part of a tweet that many people found offensive, including a survivor of the Holocaust.

Charlotte Republican Bob Rucho tweeted on Sunday, "Justice Robert's pen & Obamacare has done more damage to the USA then the swords of the Nazis, Soviets & terrorists combined."

That tweet has sparked a heated conversation statewide and across the Internet.

"When I read Senator Rucho's quote this morning, it just made my blood boil," Bob Mulder, a real estate agent in Raleigh, said Monday.

Mulder's parents survived Nazi occupation in The Netherlands.

"My parents never talked about it much," Mulder said,  "My relatives never talked about it much, but when they did, it was a pretty horrifying story."

It's a horrifying story that Susan Cernyak-Spatz of Charlotte lived through.  Her mother did not.  She was one of the six million Jews killed in The Holocaust.

On Monday, Cernyak-Spatz told WCNC-TV, "The Comparisons are so obscene," and said Rucho should resign.

"To compare that to the murders of the holocaust, to the battlefields, to the millions that died, it's insensitive and obscene.  absolutely obscene," she said.

Rucho is not bowing to critics.  He told WCNC he has no regrets and no apologies.

"I'm entitled to my speech.  it wasn't derogatory," Rucho said.  "If it was taken that way, that's because of their own personal problems, not mine."

Rucho says he was making a point about Obamacare's impact on the economy compared to war, in a 140 characters or less.

"Six million people have lost their healthcare, but nobody seems to be concerned about it.  I am," he said.

Back in Raleigh, Mulder told WNCN he's heard enough.  He plans to vote with his wallet.

"When he runs for re-election, I will do some research on who's running against him," Mulder said, "and if I find a good person down there that's moderate, and who will listen to both sides of the aisle, they'll get a check."

North Carolina Republican Party chairman Claude Pope has asked Rucho to apologize, calling the tweet "highly offensive."

Rucho says he has no need to respond to Pope, and that what he stands on is the truth.

North Carolina Democratic Party spokesman Micah Beasley called Rucho's remarks "outrageous."
