Man hits $40 million lottery jackpot, gives away all of his winnings

Posted: Updated:
CANADA - While a couple of lucky people in the U.S. are counting their millions from Tuesday night's lottery drawing, one man in Canada is giving his away.

Tom Crist of Calgary hit the Western Canada Lottery $40 million jackpot in May and kept it a secret until now.

He and his son went to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre this week to donate $1.2 million of his winnings.

It was in honor of his wife Jan who died of cancer in February 2012.

"She'd be a hundred percent behind it,” said Crist.  “There's no doubt about it, she'd be ecstatic about this amount and I know that for sure."

Crist says he'll donate the rest of his prize money over the next several years through a family foundation; it will be divided among charities he supports.
