MANTEO, N.C. -

The head of the Dare County Board of Commissioners had rave reviews for Secretary Tony Tata and the North Carolina Department of Transportation after the Bonner Bridge was re-opened.

The bridge over Oregon Inlet re-opened Sunday after being closed since Dec. 3 after erosion raised questions about the safety of the bridge. The DOT hired a contractor to pump said under the bridge to support it.

Warren C. Judge, the chair of the board, wrote to Tata Dec. 16 to praise the DOT for its response to the Bonner Bridge. The letter was posted on Tata's official Facebook page.

Judge wrote:

"In a stunning and strategic way, NCDOT immediately mobilized a comprehensive, multi-faceted response to the Bonner Bridge crisis. We witnessed first-hand a unified team approach that involved countless NCDOT staff across the State of North Carolina."

Judge said the DOT "faithfully kept local leaders and the public well-informed each step of the way. Sometimes we were given news we didn't want to hear, but even then we deeply respected the way NCDOT always put public safety first."
