RALEIGH, N.C. -

A fifth grade student at West Lake Elementary School is facing disciplinary action after an airsoft pellet gun he brought on the bus went off, striking another student.

The Wake County Public School System confirmed the male student pulled out the pellet gun on a bus transporting students from Lake Elementary School and West Lake Middle School.

The pellet gun went off on the bus, hitting another student in the leg. That student was unharmed, the school system said.

The fifth grader with the pellet gun went to class and showed a few students the gun.

"The investigation is ongoing," said Stella Shelton with Wake County Schools. "Any type of an infraction like this is investigated. The punishment is meted out supporting to N.C. general statute and school board policy."

The school resource officer at the middle school was informed of the incident and notified the principal at the elementary school, the school system said.

Raleigh police have yet to decide if charges will be filed in the incident.
