Wake Forest police said nearly 100 stolen storm drain grates have been recovered from Wake Forest, Rolesville and Raleigh.
Police officials said their investigation is ongoing but the recovered grates are being returned to the respective municipalities.
The grates, which weigh over 100 pounds each, cover drains that often have a drop of more than 10 feet. When a drain cover is stolen it leaves a hole that would be easy for children, animals or adults to fall in.
"Kids ride up and down around here all the time -- skateboards and everything -- so it is definitely potentially a danger," said homeowner John Payne.
Wake Forest street crews are replacing over 60 grates in several neighborhoods, officials said.
All of the
grates are expected to be reinstalled by tomorrow. More information is expected to be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
