Emerald Isle organizing controlled deer hunt

Posted: Updated:
EMERALD ISLE, N.C. - Town officials in Emerald Isle are organizing a controlled deer hunt.

Town staff members have been closely tracking the number of deer-related car accidents on the island in recent years. In 2012, there were 19.

Through November of this year, there have already been 30 reported deer-related accidents.

Biologists recommend the town remove around 50 deer per year to maintain a healthy population.

In 2012, a similar hunt wasn't very successful. Only 17 deer were killed.
