Columbus shoppers may be affected by Target's Card Data Breach

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Some of those 40 million accounts are potentially right here in Columbus. A local man is concerned that his debit card account was put on hold after his bank found that his information was compromised. There are several steps you should take if your information was breached.

If you used a debit or credit card at Target from November 27th through December 15th, you are potentially at risk. Muscogee County Deputy Coroner, Freeman Worley remembers shopping at the store during this time.

Just 2 days before people lined up outside Target stores across the county to do their Black Friday shopping, hackers breached the company's card system and collected information until this past Sunday. Worley remembers going into the store with his wife within the last month.

"The reason I can remember is my wife bought a pocketbook at Target," said Worley.

Wednesday afternoon Worley tried to make a purchase but his card was declined. He knew he had the funds on his account so he called his bank to find out what was wrong. They had put a hold on his account because his card was used out of town, but not by him or his wife.

"If that's been a local store, I never would've picked up on it. The bank probably would've never picked up on it. You know it just so happens it was out of the area where the transaction hit," said Worley.

Whoever had his card number spent a little more than $100 at a Kroger in Snelville but he's working with the fraud department at his bank to get those funds back. Worley's account is potentially one of 40 million that have been affected. If you information was compromised there are some steps you can take.

You should contact your bank or credit card issuer to tell them your account has been compromised. Alert one of the credit reporting agencies to put a fraud alert on your account. Pay special attention to your card statements especially if you used a debit card.

"Be more aggressive because that has direct access to your banking account," said Leonard Crain at the Better Business Bureau.

The BBB is also warning people to be on the lookout for fraudulent emails. Scammers may try to get personal information by offering to fix your compromise credit or debit card accounts.

You can check your credit report annually for free to make sure no one has opened accounts in your name. You can do that at www.annualcreditreport.com.
