PHENIX CITY, Ala. - The Central High Red Devil basketball team has a goal this season of making it deeper into the playoffs than they did last year.

The running gunning Central High Red Devils have been doing just that this season in winning their first eight games of the year.

The Devils have been led by a trio of veteran players including senior Devin Pugh who is averaging nearly 24 points per game.

Central has also gotten good leadership from Anthony Moore who pumped in 20 pts and snatched down 14 rebounds in a hard fought 78-70 victory over Northside and Mark Rogers who helped lead the way in the teams win last Tuesday night over Harris County.

“We are really working hard every day,” said Rogers. “In the morning and in afternoon practice, Coach Wright is really hard on us because we have a good group with us coming back. He is expecting a lot out of us this year.”

“He was coaching us during the summer time and talking about getting better and doing what we’re supposed to do. We have to play hard,” said Moore.

“We all got one common goal,” said Pugh. “That is to win state. To win state, we have to have some discipline. Coach pushed that. He told me and Mark that we have to be leader. That is what we have to do. We have to step it up.”

Central head coach Bobby Wright says the strength of this year’s team has been its senior leadership. And did the Red Devils expect to be eight and oh at this point in the season…you bet.

“I think we have some talent,” said Coach Wright. “We just have to get some experience under our belt. If we do that and we keep practicing and working hard, the sky is the limit.”

Meanwhile, the Central basketball team has been tabbed as the number one seed in the boys bracket in next week’s Shaw Christmas basketball tournament.

Before that though, the high flying Red Devils will go up against their arch rival the Warriors of Russell County on the road this Friday night.

And of course, when they take the court, they’ll do so as our WRBL athletes of the week.
