Durham Public Schools Superintendent Eric Becoats resigned from his post ion Thursday night.
The decision was made during a closed meeting, Durham Public Schools Spokesperson Chrissy Pearson confirmed.
Becoats' resignation statement shows the school board agreed to pay him a one-time severance payment of $298,072.54. His resignation takes effect Dec. 31.
Hugh Osteen, deputy superintendent of operations for Durham Public Schools, will serve as interim superintendent.
Last year, the school board extended Becoats' contract end date from June 30, 2104 to June 30, 2016. But the school board changed their stance in November opting against a raise and a possible extension beyond 2016.
Becoats has been under fire for inappropriate use of an activity bus and questionable use of a school system credit card. Becoats charged more than $21,000 to the school system.
