Man charged with murder after Eufaula stabbing

Posted: Updated:

Police have made an arrest in the Saturday morning murder in Eufaula.

Police have charged Johnny Devose Jr. with murder in the stabbing of 55-year-old Jessie Hill. Both men are from Clayton, Alabama.

Eufaula police responded to an altercation at a home in the Edgewood community early Saturday morning. They found 55-year-old Jessie Hill with multiple stab wounds.

When Gloria Johnson, Hill’s sister, first heard the news, she was told her brother wasn't in good condition.

“There were several calls to the house. I didn't hear the phone ring. My nephew came down and let us know that my brother had been involved in an altercation and it wasn't looking good for him,” says Johnson.

Johnson says Hill was living with his girlfriend at the house where he was found stabbed. Police say they believe an altercation between Devose and Hill led to the murder. Johnson says the argument may have been about the girlfriend.

Whatever the cause, Johnson says she'll remember her brother as always being there when she needed him.

“He was a kind-hearted person. He would do anything to help anybody. This is how we were raised,” says Johnson.

Hill was transferred to a Eufaula hospital after the incident. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a few hours later. An autopsy is scheduled for this week.

Hill leaves behind three children aged 21-30. All of them live near Eufaula.
