CHARLOTTE — Dieter Melhorn caught a big one when he went fishing at Lake Wylie, not far from the family's home in Cramerton. The State reports Melhorn reeled in a 60-pound, 3-ounce blue catfish for the master angler December 20. It's his biggest at Wylie and unofficially among the five largest ever at the reservoir near Charlotte.
Melhorn is president of the Carolina Catfish Club and a professional videographer specializing in NASCAR footage.
He told the newspaper he used white perch for bait and within 90 minutes he caught three fish, including blues of 22 and 20 pounds. Then just as he was going to call it a night he caught the big one.
Melhorn had the fish in his net within about four minutes.
