Mount Olive College will become the University of Mount Olive next week.
The school is switching to the university designation on Jan. 1.
The change was recommended by the school administration and was approved by the board of trustees earlier this month.
Board Chair Darrell Horne said the move will provide students and graduates with more prominence in the competitive job market.
School president Philip Kerstetter says over the past 62 years Mount Olive has grown from a junior college to a four-year college and now a university with an emerging graduate program.
Kerstetter says the new designation will help boost marketing and branding for the school.
The private liberal arts school has locations in Mount Olive, New Bern, Wilmington, Goldsboro, Research Triangle Park, Washington and Jacksonville.
