Durham police arrest man after he punched woman in face, snatched purse

DURHAM, N.C. -

Police arrested a man wanted on several robbery charges Thursday after he allegedly robbed a woman in downtown Durham.

Durham police responded to a robbery call just before 11 a.m. in the 300 block of Foster Street.

Police said a woman was getting in her car when a man got in the passenger side of her vehicle. The suspect grabbed the woman's purse, punched her in the face twice and then exited the vehicle, police said.

The victim screamed and honked her horn, police said. The suspect dropped the purse and began to leave the area. Bystanders called 911 and attempted to chase the suspect, police said.

Police dogs were used to track the suspect until he was found in the area of Fernway Ave. and Liggett Street, Durham police said.

Officers arrested Brandon Russell, 41, and charged him with common-law robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Russell was also served with warrants in connection with the following cases on Dec. 14, 16, 28, 29, and 31.
