Ford to debut solar car

Posted: Updated:

Move over electric cars.

Ford plans to debut its new solar-powered car next week at the Consumer Electronics Show.

The car is a version of the automaker's C-Max Energi plug-in car.

Like that car, the new C-Max solar Energi can go 21 miles on electricity between charges.

It then can switch over and run on gasoline until it is recharged.

The roof is covered with a solar cell.

Ford said its internal data show that the sun could power up to 75 percent of all trips made by an average driver.

And it estimates that the solar C-max could reduce the annual greenhouse gas emissions a typical owner would produce by four metric tons.

The car however is not ready to make its debut in dealer showrooms.
