The Color Purple to stay in NC county's classrooms

Posted: Updated:

The Brunswick County Board of Education has decided to keep using the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "The Color Purple" in some high school English classes, at least for now.
The board voted 3-2 on Friday after more than two hours of debate to keep Alice Walker's highly regarded 1982 novel in schools until they can revisit the issue at a later date.
Brunswick Commissioner Pat Sykes has pushed for the book to be removed over language and content she finds objectionable. The novel deals with such issues as racism, sexual assault and violence against women.
The book is on reading lists for 11th-grade Advanced Placement English at West Brunswick High School. Under district policy, students or parents can request alternate reading material if they object to a book's content.
