The cold wave of January 2014 has bottomed out with a record low this morning in Columbus, and it's unlikely we'll even reach the freezing mark for a high today.

We reached an official low of 11º this morning, breaking the old record for January 7 of 17º set back in 1970.  This is also the coldest temperature Columbus has experienced since February 5, 1996 when it reached 10º.  Auburn reached 9º for a low, and LaGrange also dropped to 9º.  At Callaway Gardens in Harris County, they recorded a low of 7º.

In north Georgia, the town of Blue Ridge in Fannin County got down to -2º, and Blairsville reported -1º.

Winds diminished some by early morning, but Auburn was reporting subzero chill factors for several hours.  The lowest reported in Columbus was 1 early this morning.

The record lowest maximum temperature for today in Columbus is 34º, and it's likely we'll fall short of that reading for our high today.  Tonight we are likely to wind up in the teens again if skies remain clear and winds go calm as expected, though it will not be as cold as this morning.  If we climb above freezing sometime around midday Wednesday, it will be more than 40 consecutive hours spent below freezing in Columbus.

On Wednesday our high should top 40º with 50s expected by Friday and 60s by the weekend along with our next chance of rain.
