UPDATE: The Board of Education voted 4-3 to suspend Seth Kolodny for 60 days without pay beginning Thursday January, 9th.
The Board of Education for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School District heard a termination hearing for Gould Elementary teacher Seth Kolodny. Kolodny is accused of pushing and kicking a 6-year-old student who was misbehaving. SCCPSS spokesman, Kurt Hetager, said the incident occurred November 18, 2013. Hetager said based on the information readily available the district is making a recommendation for termination of contract with the teacher. The teacher is disputing the allegations and has requested the fair dismissal hearing.
During the hearing, both sides agreed that in November a six-year-old student went up to Kolodny and aggressively snatched a paper out of his hands. The story changes after that point. The six-year-old said his teacher kicked and pushed him. The teacher said he never touched the child.
The mom of the six-year-old and the attorney for Kolodny shared mixed reactions about the verdict.
"He's not even apologetic of what happened to the child, my son. The 60 days with suspicion is okay with me because I know it's his career, so I'm not furious about it, but it was just more so his testimony was a lie to me," said mom Jessica Creech.
"He certainly stands by his testimony that he never touched the child. On the other hand we recognize the superintendent's recommendation does carry a lot of weight with the board, and the fact that the board did not go along with the recommendation to terminate him, I think it was a positive thing," said attorney Alan Lowe.
The school district's spokesman said Kolodny has been teaching at Gould for eight years. After the alleged incident, Kolodny was removed from his classroom and has been assisting the media specialist in the library. Human Resources has no previous record on the teacher.
