Prosecutors to retry Kareem Lane for '92 murder of Muscogee superintendent

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Kareem Lane will face a retrial on charges he murdered then-Muscogee County schools Superintendent Jim Burns, prosecutors announced in court Wednesday afternoon.

The deadly mystery dates back to a late night in October 1992. Lane was accused of fatally stabbing Muscogee County School District Superintendent Jim Burns in his Broadway home. Lane had recently moved to the area at the time, and was a 17-year-old Shaw High School student at the time. Burns was a husband and father, who was also at the center of controversy among school board members.

Two families were left torn and disappointed with the response from a deadlocked jury in September of 2012 after three days of deliberations. The jurors vote was 10 to 2. The prosecution said at the time that ten voted for acquittal. Judge Bobby Peters declared a mistrial.

Juror selection in the new trial is expected to begin on August 19. The trial is scheduled to begin by August 25.
