St. Clair County family survived a house fire thanks to one family member

Posted: Updated:
A Moody family is counting their blessings after their entire family made it out alive, thanks to one member who went back into the house to make sure his loved ones got out in time.

What's left of the home may make you wonder how they got out of it.

Tim Flowers said, “The whole back of the house was filled up with smoke.”

He woke up, before sunrise Wednesday, and his house was on fire.

“I started waking everybody up, and I was in panic mode,” Flowers said. “I told them to get up and get out because I thought the house was on fire.”

He said he didn't want to make it out alive unless his family survived.  When he realized they were not outside, by his side, Flowers went back in for them. He battled the smoke and the flames.

“It's my family and I love them. I mean if my family is going to be in it and get burned up, I’m going with them,” he said.

There were second degree burns on his face and the glow of an antibiotic to help the burns heal. Injuries, yes, but he will live. What he would not have been able to live without...them.

Flowers said the 1920s-style house was engulfed in flames in about 10 minutes.  He said initially, his wife woke him up because she heard a loud noise. She thought she heard someone knocking on the door.

Eight puppies and a cat were killed in the blaze. The moody fire department is now investigating to see what caused the fire.
