Blog: UAB Football has potential; Blazers should hire Josh Niblett

Posted: Updated:
The Blazers have an all-time record of 112-147-2…they’ve never won a conference title…and have only made one bowl game appearance.

Their stadium is old…very old and crumbling, and I’ve seen high schools with better practice facilities.

But this can be a winning football program.

I graduated from UAB, I’ve worked for UAB Athletics, and I’ve covered UAB Athletics. It’s a special place, a special job, and will take a special coach. Garrick McGee wasn’t that coach, and at the end of the day, him leaving will be a blessing in disguise. The next coach will have to understand the makeup of the area, and fight everyday for exposure. UAB is located in the middle of the epicenter of college football, but the Blazers don’t wear crimson and white or orange and blue. UAB’s next coach will have to spread the word, seek out the media, and become a loud voice for the program.

They have one of the largest student bodies in the state, but have very low support. Getting student support will be the key to building a winning program. An on campus stadium would make things easier, but they can’t seem to build a stadium without support. At the end of the day it all comes down to winning, but what comes first the chicken or the egg?

So the half a million dollar question is….who will be the next head coach?

Will the Blazers go after guys like Houston Nutt or Ed Orgeron? Take another shot at an SEC assistant? Or attempt to bring a guy like Mark Hudspeth back into the state?

I say the right man for the job is already in the area, and works just a few miles south of campus. Hoover’s Josh Niblett is 84-6 with 4 State Titles during his past 6 seasons with the Bucs. He knows the area, the media, and is a proven winner. Coaches like Gus Malzahn and Hugh Freeze have proven that a high school coach can be successful at the highest levels of college football.

Niblett understands this area. He can build support. He knows how to coach football. That’s the 3 keys to building a winning program at UAB, and I think it would be the right move for the Blazers.

Who do you think should be the next coach at UAB?
