Western NC city regroups after gas line explodes, burns

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -

A shaken western North Carolina community is rebuilding after a burst gas transmission line sent flames shooting several stories high that were visible for miles

No one was injured in the Friday afternoon blast. Repaving crews on Sunday expected to finish repairing the Asheville road severed by the exploding gas.

PSNC Energy spokeswoman Angie Townsend said the utility hopes to explain soon what caused the 12-inch underground pipe to rupture and explode. The fire burned for more than 90 minutes until PSNC Energy workers shut off the flowing gas.

Utility workers went door-to-door to turn on gas meters and relight pilot lights in about 700 homes that lost service following the eruption that shook buildings and send chunks of debris raining down.
