SALISBURY, N.C. - An escaped inmate who was thought to be headed to Pitt County has been captured.

The State Department of Public Safety says 27-year-old Jonathan Dixon, who escaped Monday morning from a state prison in Salisbury, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Authorities found him on Auction Drive, just off I-85 in Salisbury.

Officers noticed he was gone around 4 o'clock Monday morning, but don't know how he escaped the 952-bed minimum security prison.

Dixon was serving a maximum 7 years for multiple counts of breaking and entering.

Officials say Dixon has family and friends living in and near Pitt County.
