Founded in 2006 as Mission Columbus Medical Clinic, Good Shepherd Health Care helps those without insurance of any kind, including Medicare and Medicaid. You must live below the federal poverty level. For example a family of four earning less than $24,000 a year. Executive Director Wayne Gallups says he believes there will always be people who simply cannot afford insurance, despite the Affordable Care Act.
“If you’re living below the poverty line, chances are you just have barely enough money to purchase insurance. It’s just, if you didn't’t have 10 dollars to pay for insurance yesterday, then you’re not going to have it today,” said Gallups.
Dr. Sarah Barr is the full time physician. She used to volunteer at the clinic. She says without a regular doctor, the under served will open themselves up to even greater health issues down the road.
“Their chronic medical illnesses with diabetes, High blood pressure, cholesterol increases the risk for heart attacks and things, they’re also not getting managed properly and if they go to the emergency room that causes a lot more expenses,” said Barr.
You must make an appointment at Good Shepherd Health Care. The number to call is 706-507-4687. It’s located at 3679 Steam Mill Road in Columbus. The clinic relies on private donors for funding.
A Diabetes Expo is planned for March 28th and 29th.
