20 years after deadly Northridge earthquake, CA prepared for the next one

Posted: Updated:
CALIFORNIA - Friday marks the 20th anniversary of the deadly Northridge earthquake that killed 57 people and caused $20 billion in damage.

California has been preparing to deal with large-scale earthquakes ever since.

The U.S. Geological Survey is developing an early warning system that sends alerts to cell phones and computers up to a minute before a quake hits.
It relies on 400 solar-powered sensors set up along California’s fault lines.

"If you can detect that earthquake very quickly, you can warn people before the strongest shaking arrives at their location,” said Doug Given, USGS Geophysicist, Earthquake Early Warning Coordinator.

Scientists say they need 400 more sensors to improve accuracy.  Trains in San Francisco are already connected to the system and will automatically slow down during a quake.

Experts say there's more than a 99-percent chance another major earthquake will hit the state over the next 30 years.
