Lee County kids honor Dr. King

OPELIKA, Ala. - Martin Luther King Day Jr. celebrations were going on all around the Chattahoochee Valley on Monday.

In Lee County, the Dream Day Foundation celebrated their 15th year of honoring Dr. King.

Hundreds of people gathered at Opelika High School. They all want to do the same thing: remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the way his dream changed our world.

Complete with a red carpet introduction, powerful songs, and impersonation of celebrities, the Dream Day Foundation's MLK Day program was a celebration for Lee County. Many kids in the area grow up through this program.

"These kids of course, we all them our dream warriors. We have kids that have been with us all the way from the age of 6 through college," said Marion Sankey, founder of the Dream Day Foundation.

Two of the dream warriors hosted the program by impersonating Steve Harvey and NeNe Leakes from the Real Housewives of Atlanta. They've seen many people learn about Dr. King's work by performing every year.

"It teaches us to keep the dream alive and really pursue what he had for us," said Terence White.

"It shows how versatile the dream is. It is not just one type of goal. It is a common goal for all types of people. It reaches everybody," said Candice Lewis.

James Brown and Sam Cooke music got everybody moving. But, the unity created by Dr. King is what it is all about.

"I think he would be amazed at what we're doing today with our young people. We are doing something positive and of course, honoring him for what he has done," said Sankey.

Organizers say that the kids that participate in the program obviously learn a lot about Dr. King's dream. But, it is a great reminder to the people in attendance as well to remember what Dr. King meant to this world
