RALEIGH, N.C. -
The trial of a Wake County woman accused of killing her husband's ex-girlfriend and dumping her dismembered body in a Texas creek began Tuesday.
Prosecutors have said that Amanda Hayes and her husband Grant Hayes killed Laura Ackerson. Ackerson is the ex-girlfriend of Hayes and the mother of his two children.
During a hearing last month, Amanda Hayes' defense attorney Johnny Gaskins said he found a biohazard suit and latex gloves inside the SUV that prosecutors said transported the dismembered remains of Ackerson to Texas, where her remains were later discovered in a creek.
Gaskins hoped to prove Grant Hayes used the items and that his client was not responsible for the murder.
She pleaded not guilty last month to murder. In September 2013, a jury found her husband, Grant, guilty of killing Ackerson in July 2011.
