RALEIGH: NCDOT crews ready roads for winter weather - WRBL

NCDOT crews busy maintaining roads during wintry weather

The North Carolina Department of Transportation prepped roads in Wake, Durham and surrounding counties in preparation for winter weather Tuesday evening.

In Cary,  workers spent the day spreading brine on roads, bridges and overpasses to help keep ice from forming.

Once the wintry precipitation starts, crews spread a mixture of sand and salt. This mixture allows drivers to gain more traction on slick roads.

"We anticipate hitting the streets as soon as precipitation starts," said Scott Hecht, Town of Cary Public Works Director. "We'll have a morning crew come in around four in the morning to look at hills, overpasses and trouble spots."

In case of emergencies, the town keeps up to 400 tons of salt, and up to 22,000 tons of salt and sand at its facility in Cary.

Hecht says crews will be working around the clock to keep roads safe. The town had close to 200 people working this storm.

if snow does accumulate, workers have snow plows on stand-by ready to hit the streets.

The bridges and overpasses tend to freeze up first because there is no warm ground beneath them to provide insulation from the cold.

NCDOT offers the following safety tips for driving in winter weather:

  • Clear windows and mirrors.
  • Reduce speed and leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles.
  • Approach bridges and overpasses them with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on a bridge unless necessary.
  • If you begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide. Do not apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of the car.
  • Come to a complete stop or yield the right of way when approaching an intersection in case any vehicles coming from other directions lose control of their vehicles while trying to stop.
  • If you have a cellular phone, take it with you. You can contact the Highway Patrol statewide by calling *HP (*47) or call law enforcement by dialing 911.
