Apex mayor leaves post to become NC DOT lobbyist

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The longtime mayor of Apex has resigned to take a top job at North Carolina's Department of Transportation.

DOT announced Keith Weatherly's new post as deputy secretary for legislative affairs and policy Wednesday, one day after he announced his resignation at an Apex town council meeting, effective Friday.

Weatherly said Tuesday he was taking a new job but could not name it because an official announcement was pending.

Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane issued a statement Wednesday congratulating Weatherly for the new job.

"Keith understands the challenges in keeping the state's transportation infrastructure strong and the important role it plays in growing our economy," McFarlane said. "And although I am delighted to see another former mayor join the NCDOT in a leadership role, he will be missed by both the N.C. Metro Mayors Coalition and the Wake County Mayors Association for his collaborative efforts and leadership roles during his time as mayor of Apex."

Weatherly was first elected mayor in 1995 and led the Wake County town through a period of tremendous growth.

While mayor he worked full-time for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency and most recently in the office of House Speaker Pro Tempore Paul Stam. Weatherly will work with the General Assembly in his new job.
