Driving instructor urges safe habits for icy roads

Posted: Updated:
WINTERVILLE, N.C. - Icy conditions on the roads can be life and death for drivers.

That's why 13-year driving instructor John Gainey of North Carolina Driving School in Winterville has several safety tips for area drivers.

Gainey urged people to drive slowly through wet spots on the road.

He also said to not brake suddenly and to allow time for a vehicle to slow down.

If a car starts sliding on black ice, Gainey said drivers should not slam on the brakes, get off the gas pedal and steer in the direction of the vehicle's slide.
