Harris County students show signs of "slapped cheek" rash

Posted: Updated:
Harris County, GA - Health officials say children in Harris County have shown symptoms of fifth disease.

Ed Saidla the Program Manger for the West Central Health District says the county's epidemiologist has been in touch with the school nurse at Pine Ridge Elementary School. Saidla says that's the only school in the district with children who have the "slapped check" rash.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rash is the most recognized feature of fifth disease.

Saidla says fifth disease usually starts with a headache, a runny nose and rosy checks. Adults usually get a rash on other parts of the body.

News Three has contacted Pine Ridge Elementary School and the Harris County Superintendent, but school officials have yet to return our calls.
