The district leans Republican after the re-districting from 2010, and Democrats are expected to face a tough race against Ellmers. She beat veteran Democrat Bob Etheridge in 2010 and Steve Wilkins in 2012. In 2012, she won 56 percent of the vote.
The singer is expected to launch his campaign next month, according to the website.
Aiken, 35, is gay and has a son, Parker, who was born trhough in-vitro fertilization.
Aiken is already making political commentary on his official Twitter account.
However, the Democratic primary could be a tough one. Former N.C. Commerce Secretary Keith Criscoe, a former Asheboro councilman, has announced he is running as well.
