Hundreds mourn Wayne County Sheriff at funeral

Hundreds of mourners flocked to the University of Mount Olive to honor the life of long-time Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders.

Winders died last week after suffering a heart attack at his home getting ready to work at the job he had held since 1994.
    
Governor Pat McCrory was among the crowd of about 800 who came to pay respect.
    
Winders was born in Wayne County. He leaves behind a wife, three daughters, and two granddaughters.
    
Winders was just 57 years old.

The threat of the incoming winter weather has postponed funeral arrangements for Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders.
    
Funeral services will now be held on Friday instead of Wednesday

Visitation will continue as planned Tuesday at the Faith Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro.
    
The funeral is 2 o'clock Friday in the Kornegay Arena at the University of Mount Olive.

Winders died Friday after suffering a heart attack at his home. The 57-year-old had been sheriff of Wayne County since 1994.

Sheriff Winders' body will lie in state at Shumate-Faulk on Monday, January 27 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00p.m.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says that current Sheriff Carey A. Winders died Friday, January 24th.


The Sheriff’s Office says Sheriff Winders died Friday morning after suffering a massive heart attack at his home. He was treated by Wayne County EMS at the home and he was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Emergency room staff at the hospital treated him but he was pronounced deceased.

Funeral arrangements for Sheriff Winders are pending.

State Statue requires Major Fane Greenfield be the point person for Wayne County and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Major Greenfield will perform Sheriff’s duties until another person has been appointed by the County Commissioners to fulfill the late term of  the late Sheriff Winders.
