State Representative Calvin Smyre inducted into Int'l Civil Rights Walk of Fame

State Representative Calvin Smyre is among the nine new inductees into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame. Smyre, of Columbus, was inducted Friday.

Smyre was first elected to the State House at the age of 27. He has served for 40 years. In 1987, Rep. Smyre became the first African American floor leader of the House since Reconstruction and in 1988 became the first African American Chair of the Democratic party's state legislative caucus. Smyre now serves as the Dean of the Georgia House and the Chairman Emeritus of the Democratic Party of Georgia.

Also going into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame in this class was former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes.

The International Civil Rights Walk of Fame was created in 2004. It's located in Atlanta.
