Phenix City firefighters battle blaze at Grace Baptist Church

Posted: Updated:
Phenix City firefighters battled a blaze at Grace Baptist Church as the snow began to fall Tuesday evening.

They won't be able to pin down a cause of the fire until after it is completely out, and Assistant Fire Chief Mickey Hutchinson says they most likely won't know for sure until Thursday.

WRBL first learned about the fire around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.

There was an ambulance on the scene when we arrived, but we don't believe anyone was injured.

The church's senior pastor Dr. Joseph Appiah, who has been with the congregation for 23 years, says the building is 61 years old. He says he is devastated by the fire.

Fire officials say they were prepared for icy roads, but definitely weren't expecting anything this severe. Hutchinson added, however, that the weather conditions did not affect their response time.
