RALEIGH, N.C. -

A well-known member of Raleigh's acting community is speaking out about the death of Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Hoffman was found in the bathroom of his west side Manhattan apartment late Sunday morning. New York police say drug paraphernalia and as many as eight empty bags of what is believed to be heroin were nearby.

Now, his fans and colleagues are paying tribute. That includes Ira David Wood III, executive director and founder of Raleigh's Theatre In The Park, an acting company located inside Pullen Park.

Wood met Hoffman at the 2011 premiere of the George Clooney political drama "The Ides of March." Hoffman starred in the film alongside Wood's daughter, Evan Rachel Wood.

"We lost a good one today," Wood told WNCN. "I found him very real, very honest. And yet at the same time, when you look at someone like that, they're complicated and you can see some layers that are there. I don't know how to describe it any other way, but that."

He was complicated and troubled, waging a decades-long battle with drug addiction. Hoffman talked about his struggles in a TODAY Show interview in 2002.

"I think everybody's troubled," he told Ann Curry. "I think that's part of what it's like living on the planet."

The Oscar winner was maybe best known for his turn as the title role in "Capote." He also starred in films such as "Almost Famous," "Charlie Wilson's War" and "The Big Lebowski."

He was also an accomplished stage actor, most recently winning rave reviews for his role in a revival of "Death of a Salesman."

Hoffman was known for disappearing into the roles he played. It was a disappearing act, Wood says, many stars have a hard time sustaining.

"Living in that glass house, it's got to be tough," Wood said. "This profession is littered with bodies of people who can't sustain that."

Hoffman is survived by his partner of 15 years and their three children.
