Auburn High's Evans signs with Alabama

AUBURN, Ala. -

Auburn High's Rashaan Evans chose to sign with the University of Alabama Wednesday morning in the Auburn High gym.

The five-star linebacker said the decision wasn't final until late last night, and even had a contingency plan if he changed his mind at the last second.

"I actually had an Auburn hat," Evans said, referring to inside his mother's purse. "My mom told me, ‘If you have any change in mind of which school that you want to go to, whatever you reach down and get, we're going to support regardless of who it is.'"

This makes the second straight year Nick Saban has poached a five-star linebacker from Auburn High after Reuben Foster last year. In fact, Foster's presence in Tuscaloosa also played a role in Evans's decision.

"That fact that I had a former player from Auburn High School, Reuben Foster, who is there now," Evans said. "Also, the fact that I get, not only help with the football aspect, but also the outside aspect of my education."

The senior's final three were Alabama, Auburn and UCLA, but most had it down to the Tide or Tigers.

"I had to pick the best school for me, regardless of where it was, regardless whether it was [Auburn], Alabama or UCLA," Evans said.

Rashaan's father is a former Tiger himself

"We all debated over it, and over and over again," said Alan Evans. "It went right down to the wire. We had two hats in his mother's purse, and he was free to pull either one of those hats that he wanted to."

For Crimson Tide fans, Alan's next sentence could be seen as a bit of poetic justice.

"I think it went right down to the last second."
