DOT hosts town hall on proposed ferry tolls

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. - Folks along the coast will have another chance Thursday night to weigh-in on proposed ferry tolls.

The State Department of Transportation has been proposing toll hikes for the past two-years.  The state says it would pull in about $5 million a year to help maintain the aging ferrys.

Despite only 50 people in attendance, things still got heated between DOT administrators and the public over proposed new tolls on some ferry routes and increased tolls on other ferry routes.

The DOT hosted a town hall at Beaufort County Community College Wednesday night where many opponents including Pamlico County's Larry Summers expressed their anger towards the tolls.

"If they toll the ferries, we're probably going to lose some people who aren't going to pay the ferry toll," Summers said. "That may mean a few jobs [lost]."

The DOT's asking rural and metropolitan planning organizations to either approve new or increased ferry tolls. If the organizations don't approve those proposed tolls, then its ferries will have to fight against roads, bridges and trains for funding.

The DOT has another hearing tonight at 7 p.m. at Pamlico Community College in Grantsboro.

Next week's hearings are scheduled for Morehead City, Ocracoke and Hatteras. Find a full list here.
