Gov. Bentley announces 160 new jobs in Auburn

Posted: Updated:

The construction of an automotive supply plant in Auburn is bringing 160 new jobs to the area.

German auto manufacturer Kemmerich broke ground on their new facility Wednesday in the Auburn Technology Park West. Governor Robert Bentley attended to show his support for job growth in the state.

The automotive industry has gained some traction the past few years in East Alabama. It's one of the many industries that have produced economic development in the area.

“This is a fantastic part of the state,” says Alabama Governor Robert Bentley “I come over here so often to announce a new industry and today is one of those.”

“We're very proud of our base in the automotive industry. Kemmerich is certainly a company with a long-term stability,” says Auburn Mayor Bill Ham.

Creating jobs isn't something new to Lee County. The county has the second lowest unemployment rate in the state. Bentley attributes this to the university and a strong economic development team.

“It's one of the parts of the state that I’m very proud of, it's a part of the state that's easy to recruit industry to,” says Bentley.

“There's a great sense of pride for myself, and the city council on behalf of the entire community,” says Ham. “Great jobs with great benefits are so vitally important to the longevity of any community.”

Ham says the focus now shifts to workforce recruiting and finding qualified and experienced people for the job. The company hopes to fill the 160 jobs within the next five years. They'll post openings and have a better idea of what kind of employees they're looking for once the construction is further along.

Kemmerich plans to invest about $12 million in new facility. The company produces the metal parts on a car, and it is their first plant in the United States.
