Northside girls hoops wins Athletes of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Northside Lady Patriots have finished the regular season undefeated in region play, and for that, they are the WRBL Athletes of the Week.

"I'm excited for it," said junior guard Josie Burgos. "Even though sometimes we have our disagreements, we know what to do. We have to get the job done; we have to play as a team."

After a somewhat rocky start to the season, the Patriots have come together as a team.

"We weren't really doing well as a team, but now we're getting it together and we're jelling as a team," said sophomore power forward Jessica Herndon. "Everyone knows what they need to do and what's expected."

With the region tournament on the horizon, the Patriots have lofty goals.

"I would like us to come out of the region tournament as the champions," said senior forward Taylor Jakes. "I would love for us to win state and come out with the state trophy."

According to their head coach, the Patriots' success all comes back to playing as a team.

"I'm proud of my girls this year," said head coach Candace Turner. "We're learning how to play together, especially when adversity comes, how to overcome it by doing something else or picking up where someone else is slacking off."

Northside has a bit of a break; they don't play again until the region tournament in Bainbridge, beginning Feb. 10.
