Surgeon says Bella's 'prognosis is good'

PITTSBORO, N.C. -

The surgeon of a 3-month-old puppy injured during a domestic dispute in January says the dog's "overall prognosis is good."

On Jan. 8, Bella was attacked and her legs were injured. The Chatham County Sheriff's Office arrested Niahmetrius Williams, 23, of Chapel Hill in the case. Williams was charged with cruelty to animals, assault on a female, simple assault on an officer and communicating threats.

Officials said Williams hit his girlfriend in the face and assaulted her dog by trying to cut off its leg.

"It was touch and go, especially with the right knee, for the first month. The damage in that area affected the joint surface, her growth plate, and several critical ligaments," said Dr. Elaine Holmes, Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas.

Holmes was able to reattach most of the ligaments that were cut.

"Because of the growth plate damage, her knee will never be 100 percent normal. But, with her rehabilitation plan, I think that we can get her to a good quality of life with only minor issues," said Holmes.

As far as Bella's left leg, it's 95 percent back to normal, but she still has several more weeks of healing to go before she is ready to be adopted.

"With her determined personality and the proper rehabilitation, I think she has a great opportunity for success," said Holmes.

Once Bella is ready to be adopted, Chatham Animal Rescue and Education will post the information their website.
