SANFORD, N.C. -

Veterans Affairs broke ground for a new outpatient clinic in Sanford on Friday.

The new Sanford Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) will be built at 1248 Broadway Road near Hwy. 421.

The clinic will allow veterans in the area to more easily access VA health care closer to home.

"It's saying to the Sanford veterans and surrounding area we are really fulfilling your dream of having care closer to where you live and fulfilling that commitment to having care closer to where you live," said Elizabeth Goolsby, the director of the Fayetteville VA Medical Center.

The building will be 10,000 square feet at a cost of $2.5 million. Construction Managers Inc., of Fremont has been awarded the contract to build the Sanford CBOC. Construction Managers also built the VA clinic in Goldsboro, which opened in July, The Sanford CBOC is expected to open in early 2015.

Veterans currently enrolled at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center who live closer to the new clinic will be given priority for care there. Prior to the new facility opening, the medical center Fayetteville VA Medical Center will review its list of enrolled veterans who may benefit from transferring to the new clinic and inform them of the option.
