LEE COUNTY, Ala. -

A 30-year-old Lee County man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking on Saturday night.

Ricardo Denard Jones was walking on US Hwy 280 East near Lee Road 943 when he was hit by a car Saturday night around 7:00 p.m. Jones was either walking in the roadway or attempting to cross the roadway and stepped into the path of a Nissan Versa heading westbound, according to Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. He suffered multiple blunt force impact injuries and multiple blunt force internal injuries. The driver was transported to East Alabama Medical Center emergency room and treated for what appeared to be non life threatening injuries. Two juvenile passengers in the vehicle with the driver were not believed to be injured.

Both westbound lanes of US Hwy 280 were closed for approximately 2 hours and traffic rerouted while Troopers investigated the accident. The case will be presented to the grand jury but no charges are expected to be filed. The accident remains under investigation by Alabama State Troopers and the Lee County Coroner’s Office.
