Tracking Two Wintry Systems in the Southeast

Posted: Updated:
The first chance of snow in the southeast comes Tuesday across northern Alabama and Georgia. The first chance of snow in the southeast comes Tuesday across northern Alabama and Georgia.
Wednesday's system will bring us another round of cold rain, but freezing rain is a possibility in some locations. Wednesday's system will bring us another round of cold rain, but freezing rain is a possibility in some locations.

This week's weather is going to be interesting. First, a weak storm system will bring a quick shot of snow and ice to the Interstate 20 corridor and points north. Our northern counties, Chambers/Troup/Meriwether, could see a brief mix of rain/sleet/flurries early Tuesday morning. That same storm system will bring us a cold rain.

Storm system number 2 will move in immediately following Tuesday's system, but this one has some wrinkles to it. First, a strong high pressure will settle over New York and funnel cold air down the Appalachians; this is called Cold Air Damming, or CAD. Cold air is denser than warm air, so the cold air will be close to the surface while moist air is going over the top of it; this leads to sleet and freezing rain. We'll be right on the freezing line, so it is uncertain if Columbus and surrounding areas see freezing rain, but it's possible.

The rest of your work week after Wednesday is looking beautiful with highs back near 60 by Valentine's Day.

Sunday Night: Clouds increase throughout the night. Lows near 43

MONDAY: Scattered showers possible by mid-afternoon. Highs climb to near 60

Monday night: Cloudy with a few showers around. Low: 40

TUESDAY:  Off & on rain locally, but snow possible near I-20 & points north. High near 43

Tuesday Night: Few more showers linger. Lows near 33.

WEDNESDAY: Early morning rain could be freezing rain north and east of Columbus. Highs near 36.

Wednesday Night: Cloudy, with a flurry possible. Lows near 32

Thursday:  Starting to clear out and see more sunshine. Highs near 51.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear. Lows dip near 36.

Friday: Sunny. High: 61.

Friday Night: Clear. Lows near 39.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny, with slight chance of rain north.  Highs near 62.

Saturday Night: Clear with a few clouds late. Lows dip to near 41.
