NC Dems to name new exec. director after firing

Posted: Updated:

The North Carolina  Democratic Party has called a press conference for later this week, during which leaders plan to announce a new executive director.

Multiple sources close to the party told WNCN News, they believe that person to be former NAACP president Dr. Benjamin Chavis.

Chavis, also tweeted out this weekend, "I am now preparing to return to North Carolina. I want Democrats to win big."

The party would not confirm Monday who is getting the job.

Robert Dempsey, the former executive director was fired over the weekend. Meanwhile, Casey Mann has been appointed interim executive director.

Dempsey was named to his post last May, coming to the state after a stint as executive director of the Vermont Democratic Party. Dempsey also had served with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee before that.

The sudden removal of Dempsey continues the turmoil for the Democrats, who have suffered an unprecedented loss of power in recent years. Republicans now hold the governor's office and majorities in both houses of the General Assembly for the first time since the 19th century. The Republicans, after gaining power, also drew favorable Congressional districts and now hold nine of North Carolina's 13 seats in the House of Representatives.

The GOP is also looking to oust Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan this year and has lined up a powerful field to challenge her, led by N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis.

Monday, party insiders, told WNCN they were shocked at the dismissal, and were kept in the dark about it. They believe it was due to disputes in leadership and direction between Chair Randy Voller and Dempsey, on issues such as how campaigns should be run. It was also indicated there may have been outsider input in the decision.
